El Deafo

El Deafo is the story of a young girl in the form of a graphic novel, who, at the age of 4 loses her hearing because of meningitis. She has to wear a hearing aid, strapped to her chest to hear. She starts off school in a class with only deaf children. However, she eventually has to go to a “normal” class. There, she is afraid of being judged because she is different. She then discovers that she has a magic power, as she calls it… Since her teachers have to wear a microphone around their necks that is connected to Cece’s hearing aid, she can hear her teachers anywhere they go in the school! She starts calling herself El Deafo, and portrays herself as a superhero! Interestingly, the author, Cece Bell narrates her own story through this book, as she herself lost her hearing at the age of four and was nicknamed  El Deafo! I really enjoyed this book and found it interesting that the author chose to draw the characters of this book as humanized bunnies, because the subject treated here isn’t as light as the bunnies would suggest…
